On Monday, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University concluded a two-week training course on poultry farming under BHARAT KA AMRIT MAHOTSAV – 75 Years of India’s Independence.
11 budding farmers from different parts of Punjab participated in the training programme, which was organized by the department of veterinary and animal husbandry extension education.The project’s technical coordinator and professor, Dr SK Kansal, said poultry farming was among the most profitable industrial ventures for diversifying agriculture.Depending on the landholding, capital, and marketing facilities, one can either engage in layer farming, which produces table eggs, or broiler farming, which produces meat. To prevent communicable diseases, he advised farmers to adopt strict biosecurity measures at their farms.

Dr YS Jadoun and Dr Gurjot Kaur Mavi, coordinators of the training, said the trainees were taught about specific breeds and strains of poultry stock, GADVASU poultry breeds, hatchery management, construction of sheds for commercial farming, backyard poultry production, integrated poultry farming, management of poultry waste, prevention from heat and cold during environment stress, economical and balanced ration for different stages of the birds, making different products from egg and meat, their branding, vaccination in birds, post-mortem examination and preparation of project reports.
- During the workshop, RK Sharma, the head of the livestock department, informed participants about the numerous facilities and services provided by the university. In order to get prompt solutions to their problems, he encouraged the farmers to speak with university experts.
- A lecture on the university’s monthly magazine, Vigiyanak Pashu Palan, and books about poultry farming was provided to the trainees. AYUSH wing of GADVASU presented them with saplings of medicinal plants at the end of the program.
