Introduction

Botanical pesticides are naturally occurring substances which is used in controlling the pest.

 Biopesticides are certain types of pesticides derived from such natural materials as animals, plants, bacteria, and certain minerals.

They are secondary metabolites (phytochemicals) extracted from the plant sources which can control and kill the pests

Characteristics

  1. They are nontoxic to humans
  2. They are quick to act
  3. They degrade easily
  4. Most of these are not phytotoxic
  5. They are effective against may of the species of insects
  6. They are less harmful to environment
  7. They are non-persistent

Types

Neem based pesticides

Neem based products are extracted from the neem tree, Azadirachta indica,.

The potent active ingredients of the neem are azadirachtin, meliantriol, salannin, desacetyl salannin, nimbin, desacetyl nimbin, and nimbidin

.Azadirachtin, a tetranortriterpenoid limonoid, is one of the most potent active compounds of the neem tree . it is present in higher concentration (0.2 – 0.6%) in the seeds of the neem compared to other parts of the neem tree.

Azadirachtin A is the most active biological ingredient which shows insecticidal activity compared to other analogs of azadirachtin.

ROTENONE

Rotenone is one of the broad spectrum botanical pesticide that is extracted from the roots and stems of tropical legumes Derris (Derris elliptica, Derris involuta), Lonchocarpus (Lonchocarpus utilis, Lonchocarpus urucu) and Tephrosia virginiana .

Chemically, rotenone is the isoflavonoid..

The dried root powder is used or sprayed.

It act as a food poison, cellular respiratory enzyme inhibitor, stomach poison.

PHRETHRUM

Pyrethrum is one of the most important botanical pesticides used in India, which is extracted from the flowers of Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium ..

Pyrethrum is the mixture of six active ingredients.

Thus, pyrethrins are the most dominant form of active ingredients and  the major target is insect pests

Eucalyptus essential oil

The eucalyptus oil is a complex mixture of various phytochemicals such as monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, aromatic phenols, oxides, ethers, alcohols, aldehydes, and ketones. 

Among the various components of essential oil, 1, 8 – cineole is the most important characteristic compound for the pesticide .

In addition to the essential oil of Eucalyptus, leaf extracts of Eucalyptus also has insecticidal activity against various pests
